Vitali Klitschko: We wanted to build a modern European country, but the Russians never accepted our desire

The ex-world heavyweight champion, and now the mayor of Kyiv, explained what the aggressor wants

On the air of Piers Morgan’s British talk show “Without Caesura”, a former boxer, and now the mayor of Kyiv Vitaliy Klichko told about the causes of the war in Ukraine and our struggle for the future of the country.

“[России] need Ukrainian territory. But they don’t need population. They want to kill everyone. They want to occupy territory and they want to kill people. I will never forget those terrible pictures in Bucha. There is only one explanation for all this – this is not a war, this is genocide.

“I am very proud that I am Ukrainian, because the Russians are attacking and destroying cities, and they hope that people will be in a panic. They thought people would be depressed. Instead, people are evil and will have tremendous will to protect our city, our homes, our families. We wanted to become part of a European family in order to build a modern European country. The Russians never accepted our wish. And Putin wanted to restore the Russian and Soviet empires. Everyone should clearly understand this. These are the reasons for this senseless war.”

“We see our future as part of a European family as a democratic free country Ukraine and we are fighting right now for the future, for our country, for our children. We don’t want to live in a country without human rights, without freedom of the press, without democratic rights.”

Recall that Vitali Klitschko became a laureate of the Prize of Excellence in Sports (ESPY). The Ukrainian received the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage.

Klitschko, a former heavyweight world champion and now the mayor of Kyiv, remained in the Ukrainian capital, helping to defend Kyiv during a Russian siege.
