Seven players from Australian rugby club Manly Sea Eagles refused to enter the pitch wearing LGBT symbols. About it at a press conference informed Head Coach Des Hasler.
The team’s main players – Josh Schuster, Jason Saab, Haumole Olakahuatu, Christian Tuipulotu, Tolutau Kula, Toafofua Sipley and Josh Aloiai – refused to take the field with rainbow ribbon on their shirts, citing beliefs personal and religious.
“The club understands the plight of the players because the club did not consult them on the shirt design and will support their decision not to play,” he said.
Ahead of the start of the new season, rainbow lines appeared on the team’s kit, which speak to the club’s “inclusivity” and support for the LGBT community. They replaced the club’s traditional white stripes, which also caused dissatisfaction from a number of players.
The athletes’ decision to boycott the game caused public outcry. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he was confident fans and players of other teams would support the Manly Sea Eagles rugby players’ decision.
