The American Team Athletes Commission issued a statement on the doping case of Chinese swimmers

The U.S. team’s athletes’ commission took to social media to express its disappointment over new information about how the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) handled cases of positive doping tests among Chinese swimmers.

On Saturday, the New York Times published an article claiming that 23 Chinese swimmers had tested positive for doping. The authors accuse WADA of ignoring whistleblower data, as well as inconsistency in handling various doping cases. The Chinese Anti-Doping Agency (CHINADA) acknowledged the athletes’ positive samples, but said trimetazidine entered their bodies unintentionally and in small quantities. The organization conducted its own investigation and discovered that the substance had been found on kitchen utensils at the hotel where the swimmers lived. WADA was unable to refute the Chinese agency’s findings and did not sanction the swimmers.

“As the spokesperson for Team USA athletes, we are disappointed and outraged to learn that 23 Chinese national team athletes have tested positive for doping tests. We are also disappointed by the information that has emerged regarding WADA’s handling of this matter.

Like other athletes, we deserve fairness in competition, which also includes ensuring that all participants follow the rules and act in accordance with the spirit of those rules. We need clean and fair sport. We will continue to strive to ensure the highest integrity during competitions,” the statement said.

Chinese swimmers at the 2020 Olympics won 6 medals (3 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze) and also broke several world records.
