Figure skating coach and choreographer Ilya Averbukh considers himself an Olympic ice dancing champion Romana Kostomarova hero.
In early 2023, Kostomarov was hospitalized due to complications from pneumonia. The 47-year-old athlete began suffering from tissue necrosis and underwent several limb amputations. Kostomarov underwent prosthetic surgery.
— Roman Kostomarov has significantly improved his skating performance. He is already skating confidently and without assistance. How would you assess his progress?
— Roma is definitely a hero. There cannot be two opinions. Each of his appearances on the ice is a well-deserved ovation. Roma does not stand still. Otherwise he wouldn’t be Rom. He unfolds, feels confident. We already think that this summer, as part of our tour in Sochi, Kostomarov and his wife Oksana Domnina will present an independent performance with elements that Roman is gradually learning, ”quotes Averbukh in Sport24.
Kostomarov, together with Tatyana Navka, became a three-time champion of Russia and Europe and a two-time world champion. In 2006, they won gold at the Turin Olympics.
