Synchronized swimmer Doroshko: “Whether the best team wins at the Olympics, but whether it is with a man or not does not matter”

On the first day of the Russian championship, two-time world champion in synchronized swimming Maya Doroshko won in a duet with three-time Olympic champion Svetlana Kolesnichenko. Maya told about the shows we will see from the country’s best women’s duo this season and how participating in the show helps in the suspension situation.

— Do you have the same programs at this Russian Championship?

— Yes, but we changed them a bit due to rule changes. It’s not like there are any serious adjustments.

— Were the changes made after Vasilina Khondoshko’s performance at the World Championships?

– Yes!

— So the modifications add adequacy?

– Finally! You can now perform a move a maximum of three times. The connections have become at least a little more interesting.

— Have you watched the World Cup?

— I followed Vasilina, I saw the solo of Evangelia Platanioti and the Canadian, which shocked me.

– Do you think everything is so bad?

— In Russian synchronized swimming, the solo is always performed by a girl with beautiful legs, beautiful curves and singing hands. And there the girl seemed to have been studying for three years, and now she was doing everything she could. I screwed up, there’s no doubt about it.

— Doesn’t it seem that it is better to wait for this period without international departures while the new rules adapt to reality?

“I always want to come back to international competitions.” But again, using the example of Vasilina Khondoshko, we saw that with the greatest difficulty she was given the artistic minimum. It’s scary that this can happen – we will do everything perfectly, good complexity, but another indicator will be lowered for us. Scary.

— Varya Subbotina announced her retirement. It’s clear you knew this in advance. But how was it received?

“I’m just glad she’s at a new stage in her life, now she’s living in a different city and planning her life in a different direction.”

—Are you already tired of synchronized swimming?

— I’m a little tired, sometimes I don’t want to go to training. But it doesn’t let me down, I haven’t yet achieved everything I could, so I stay.

— Do you follow the news regarding admission?

– No. It’s already useless when it became clear that we weren’t going to the Olympics.

— Is participation in the show an outlet in this situation?

– For me, yes. It’s a delight and truly an outlet. There is a good team there, good feedback from the public. Psychologically, I appreciate it. It even seems to me that in terms of movements and improvisation, participation in the show adds a kind of inner freedom. At first I was very scared, but now I get a lot of pleasure from it.

— You only have a duo there?

— There were two releases, each with a solo and a combination of the “Sirens” duet. Performing in the show is very inspiring. I have a few minutes to speak alone. And you can change some elements of the program so that it is not boring synchronized swimming, which exists according to the current rules, but something really interesting.

— Are you going to watch the Olympic Games?

– Certainly. I would like to see what they are doing there.

— Do you want the group competition to be won by the team that nominates a man?

“The main thing is that the team is truly the best, and it doesn’t matter whether they have a man or not. For me, it’s not important.
