The Chinese Anti-Doping Agency (CHINADA) will cooperate with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) in the event of positive doping tests among Chinese swimmers, according to a statement posted on the CHINADA website.
On April 21, the New York Times published an article stating that trimetazidine was found in the samples of 23 Chinese swimmers ahead of the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. According to the source, the Chinese Anti-Doping Agency (CHINADA) conducted its own investigation, as a result of which the party adhered to the version that the substance entered the athletes’ bodies unintentionally and in small quantities. A joint investigation by the organization and Chinese police revealed that traces of the substance were found in the kitchen of the hotel where the Chinese swimmers were staying. It was not possible to know exactly how this substance ended up in the hotel kitchen. The authors accuse WADA of ignoring whistleblower data, as well as inconsistency in handling various doping cases. WADA could not refute the Chinese version and did not punish the athletes.
On Thursday, the AMA announced that it had hired independent prosecutor Eric Cottier to conduct a “thorough review” of its own work in the matter.
— China will actively cooperate with WADA and provide assistance where necessary. WADA’s decision to invite an independent prosecutor from Switzerland to review the case is a clear demonstration of WADA’s fairness, openness and transparency,” the statement said.
CHINADA also called defamatory the reports of the New York Times, the German television network ARD and the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), which “chose to ignore China’s statements on its strong stance in the fight against doping in sport.
“Prejudice and distrust are deeply rooted in their minds. These organizations and media outlets harbor misconceptions, misjudge the situation, and publish irrelevant reports and announcements that clearly contradict the facts. They are attempting to manipulate public opinion by spreading disinformation to attack WADA and CHINADA, as well as undermine the proper functioning of the global anti-doping system, the text states.
Chinese swimmers at the 2020 Olympics won 6 medals (3 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze) and also broke several world records.
