Acting President of the All-Russian Athletics Federation (VFLA) Irina Privalova expressed the opinion that if Russian athletes were admitted to the world championships, they could win three gold medals.
– Was there any hope that Russian athletes – at least those with neutral status – would be allowed to participate in the World Championships?
– A team of about twenty people could get there at best. But since March we had had no illusions about it, and no one, of course, was hoping for a trip to Eugene.
– Obviously, the Russian team could not fight for a place at the top of the overall medal standings, but it is quite possible to hold on to several awards. Now that the results in each discipline are known, can you at least roughly estimate the “shortfalls”?
– If we talk about the general classification, then, inevitably, when twenty people represent our team, we are obviously in worse conditions than the rival teams. And if we talk about individual medals … I think that with the right set of circumstances they could take three gold medals and two or three silver and bronze medals, – Kommersant quotes Privalova as saying.
Eugene’s tournament ended on July 24.
