KOS-Sintez head coach Evgeniy Yaroshchuk believes that European and world water polo is losing due to the absence of Russian teams.
World Aquatics, in accordance with the recommendations of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), does not allow Russians in team events to compete under its auspices. In the context of the situation in Ukraine, European Aquatics has suspended Russian athletes from their competitions. KOS-Sintez, which won the title of national champion, will not be able to participate in the Eurocups.
— If you compare the path to this title and the previous one, which was more difficult?
— For us, these titles are no different from each other. All the trophies we have won are a great joy and pride: for the club, for our sponsor, who has supported the club for 50 years, for the entire Republic of Tatarstan. This is a goal achieved for the season,” Yaroshchuk told .
— Which is more difficult, returning the title or defending it?
– All this is hard and painstaking work! We had to fight hard and fight all season to win our trophy.
— What is the most difficult championship match for your team?
— The first match of the semi-final series in Kazan: we played against a good and strong team “Dynamo Astrakhan”. We won this match on penalties 15-13!
Everything didn’t work for us on defense; our opportunities in attack were poorly exploited. As the match progressed, we were able to reorganize ourselves, work better defensively in the second half and literally snatch the victory by the skin of our teeth.
— Over these two years, without the experience of international games, the Russian championship has lost quality?
“We are losing not only ourselves, but also the entire European and world water polo. The level of our men’s team has allowed us to be in the top 8 in all major international competitions, and our women’s team has always been in the top 4. It is a very good level. I think everything will be fine and we will return for the highest tasks. We have strong clubs, strong sports schools in the regions, and the Russian Water Polo Federation team works professionally.
