Wilder: It would be easier for me to fight Usyk than Fury because we don’t know each other

Deontay previously boxed with the “Gypsy King” three times – and never won

Former WBC World Heavyweight Champion Deontay Wilder suggested which of the participants in the upcoming fight for the title of absolute world champion in heavyweight between the champion according to WBO/WBA/IBF/IBO Alexander Usik and WBC title holder Tyson Fury it would be easier for him to fight.

“I think that of these two, the easiest fight for me would be against Oleksandr Usyk. To see his style or whatever, styles define fights and I think it would be easier with him because I’ve never fought him and we don’t know each other.”

“We fought with Fury many times, so we know each other, with him it would be different. When you fight someone you haven’t fought before, you don’t know what surprises are going to happen, and I take that from there,” Deontay explained.

The unification fight between Usik and Fury will take place on May 18. The list of other fights that will take place as part of the boxing evening in Saudi Arabia is also known. Among them is the fight between Ukrainian Daniel Lapin and Portuguese Octavio Pudivitra for the WBA Continental light heavyweight title.

The event will be hosted by Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The WBC proposes to reform the judges for the reporting fight, increasing their number to 5-6 people. Penalties for boxers who refuse to fight are $10 million.

If Usyk wins, Wilder will have to wait to fight him, since there will be many boxers on the list of contenders ahead of Deontay, including, for example, Anthony Joshua.

Previously, Wilder faced the “Gypsy King” three times in the ring. Their first match in December 2018 ended in a draw. In February 2020, Tyson inflicted the first defeat of his career on Deontay, after which he consolidated his success in October 2021, winning with a spectacular knockout in the 11th round.

On June 1, Wilder will fight Zhang Zhilei. The fight will also take place in Saudi Arabia. In addition to them, as part of a large-scale boxing evening between the promotional companies Queensberry and Matchroom, British heavyweight Daniel Dubois and mandatory challenger for the IBF title Filip Hrgovic will enter the ring.
