Athletistic / Olympic Games. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) does not intend to give Russian athletes the awards they rightfully received after considering the results of the previous Olympic Games.
“The redistribution of medals should and has always been managed by the National Olympic Committee (NOC). When the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) was not suspended, it did not return the medals to the International Olympic Committee after the results of 15 Russian athletes. or the teams presented at the previous Olympic Games were canceled. Therefore, despite the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee, we are now unable to redistribute medals to Russian athletes,” the IOC press service said in a statement to TASS.
In July 2018, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne (Switzerland) rejected Moldovan canoeist Sergei Tarnovski’s appeal against WADA’s decision to disqualify him for doping. As a result, his bronze medal at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) over a distance of 1,000 meters should go to Russian Ilya Shtokalov. The IOC made the final decision to transfer the medal to the Russian canoeist in August 2018, but still has not awarded Shtokalov the well-deserved medal.
Note that on October 12, 2023, against the background of the inclusion of representatives of new regions of the Russian Federation (DPR, LPR, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions) in the ROC, the IOC suspended the Russian Olympic Committee.
