Svetlana Romashina: “I don’t know where world synchronized swimming is going, but it’s sad to watch”

Seven-time Olympic synchronized swimming champion Svetlana Romachina told she was sad to see how her sport was changing with the new rules.

World Aquatics made adjustments to the new rules after February’s World Championships in Qatar, particularly regarding all elements. The first Russian championship using these program adjustments took place at the end of April in Yekaterinburg.

— The emotions of the Russian Championship are very different. On the one hand, I can say that Russian synchronized swimming has coped with this and adopted new rules. I am happy that we as a country have easily adopted the new rules, this applies more to the senior team. As a director, I observed how the children adopted new rules, although we encountered some difficulties. I would like to congratulate the senior and junior teams. The junior team played under a new part of the updated rules, introduced just after the World Championships in Qatar. At the BRICS Games, competitions will be held according to these rules.

— You said that emotions are different…

— Because you have to get used to the new synchronized swimming. I don’t know where our sport is going, I mean world synchronized swimming. If changes are introduced, restrictions on certain rounds, as was the case after the World Cup in Qatar, if scores are added for artistry and composition, then development is possible. But what it looks like now on a global level… To be honest, I’m sad to see all this,” Romashina told .
