The athlete took fire from the hands of athletes from 27 EU countries
Ukrainian gymnast Maria Vysochanskaya carried the torch with Olympic flame in Marseille.
During the relay ceremony, the torch was carried by representatives of 27 European Union countries. After this, the torch was handed over to the Ukrainian woman, who led the further solemn procession.
“It is very difficult to express in words all the emotions that I experience. I feel proud and incredibly happy that Ukraine has become the 28th country to carry the flame along with the EU countries, and that the captain honored me by allowing me to carry the Olympic flame,” said Maria.
21-year-old Vysochanskaya is a two-time European champion in team exercises in rhythmic gymnastics. Maria also won a bronze medal as part of the Ukrainian team at the 2023 World Championships in the three-ribbon and two-ball competition.
Vysochanskaya took part in the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. As part of the Ukrainian national team, the gymnast won a license in the team all-around for the 2024 Games in Paris.
