Senior coach of the Russian national team Yuri Borodavko told that the last season of Russian skiers can be classified as a solid four.
During the 2021/22 season, the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) suspended Russian athletes from competitions under the auspices of the organization due to the situation in Ukraine. Over the past two seasons, Russian skiers have not competed on the international stage.
— What assessment can you give to your group and the Russian team as a whole based on the results of the season?
— Overall, I can give it a solid four. In national competitions, we have taken a big step forward; the stages of the Russian Cup took place at the highest level. We have a great team, some have had a successful season, some haven’t, injuries and illnesses have hampered us.
The exclusion (from international competitions) has benefited our young athletes: they compete with the best Russian skiers and progress very powerfully. The main leaders are, of course, at a disadvantage: they would now participate in the World Cup stages, where they could show their abilities. Suddenly, we see how young people support us and do not allow them to live in peace (smiles).
— Who can you call for the season opener?
—It’s not like someone made a breakthrough and showed up brilliantly. All results were predictable and expected. Saveliy Korostelev added for boys, Alina Pekletsova for girls and Ekaterina Nikitina at a slightly lower level,” Borodavko told .
