Ukrainian goalkeeper Andrey Lunin is vying for a place in the starting lineup
Goalkeeper coach Real Madrid’s Luis Llopis believes that in the final Champions League 2023/24 The Belgian could join Blancos Thibaut Courtois, if it is in its optimal shape. Another contender for a place in the team is the Ukrainian Andrey Lunin.
“We bet on Kepa, and Lunin turned everything around. So who knows if I could be wrong in my advice. I would bet on Courtois if he is at his best, he is the best in the world. But we have to make sure he’s at his best.”
It was previously reported that Blancos head coach Carlo Ancelotti intends to release Courtois in the final match of the Champions League. Club president Florentino Perez also believes that the Blancos squad will be more balanced with Thibaut present.
The final decision will be made after the completion of La Liga matches with Granada, Alaves, Villarreal and Betis, where the Belgian will receive match practice. If Courtois’ performance does not raise doubts among the coaching staff, then Thibault will also make it to the Champions League final.
In total, Lunin has already played 30 matches for Los Blancos this season, 12 of them to zero, and missed 28 goals. His four saves helped Ancelotti’s side beat Bayern Munich 2-1 and reach the Champions League final. Courtois played only one match (aka “dry”), missing almost the entire season due to a knee injury.
In the 2023/2024 Champions League final, Real Madrid will play against Borussia Dortmund, which beat PSG on aggregate. The Champions League final will take place on June 1 in London.
