Independent prosecutor begins reviewing WADA’s actions in Chinese swimmers’ case

Independent prosecutor Eric Cottier has begun examining the actions of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) in investigating the case of positive doping tests among Chinese swimmers, WADA President Witold Banka said.

On Friday, a meeting of the founding council of the AMA was held online, during which the agency informed the council members of the progress of the file.

On April 21, the New York Times published an article stating that trimetazidine was found in the samples of 23 Chinese swimmers ahead of the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. According to the publication, the Chinese Anti-Doping Agency (CHINADA) conducted its own investigation, as a result of which the party adhered to the version that the substance entered the athletes’ bodies unintentionally and in small quantities.

A joint investigation by the organization and Chinese police revealed that traces of the substance were found in the kitchen of the hotel where the Chinese swimmers were staying. It was not possible to know exactly how this substance ended up in the hotel kitchen. The authors accuse WADA of ignoring whistleblower data, as well as inconsistency in handling various doping cases.

Chinese swimmers at the 2020 Olympics won 6 medals (3 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze) and also broke several world records.

— It is clear that those concerned have questions. This is a complex case, and I am pleased that we had the opportunity to provide council members with the facts and answer their questions. An independent prosecutor has already opened an investigation. He will have full access to all WADA records and information we have.

He also has the right to choose any other independent expert to assist him if he considers it necessary. WADA will be ready to consider any of its recommendations on this issue,” Banki was quoted as saying by the WADA press service.

WADA’s first president, Richard Pound, accused the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) of deliberately lying to WADA.

“I am deeply disappointed and outraged by USADA’s deliberate lies, including WADA’s alleged cover-up of doping in China.

This accusation has only one goal: to deliberately damage WADA’s reputation and undermine its credibility around the world. USADA’s behavior lacks willingness to work towards solutions, and there is nothing but incessant and biased criticism from them,” he said.

The AMA announced in late April that it had invited independent prosecutor Eric Cottier to conduct a “thorough review” of his own work in the case. USADA criticized the prosecutor’s choice, pointing out that WADA is violating its own rules.
