FIFA tests video replay challenge system

The coach has the right to challenge the referee’s decision at least twice per match

FIFA testing the application system “challenges” For video replayssaid the head of the committee of arbitrators Pierluigi Collina.

According to the Italian, we are talking about a less expensive VAR scheme. The method was tested on fields with three controlled cameras, and arenas with seven automatic cameras providing different viewing angles. FIFA held two youth tournaments using the new system.

The main principle is the right of coaches to take a “challenge”, as in tennis matches. To do this, the head coach “twirls his finger in the air” and gives a special card to the fourth referee. A team has a minimum of two attempts per match to challenge a wrong decision by the referee. If the challenge was successful, the team saves the attempt for a new one.

The innovation is not planned to be used as a mandatory replacement for the current VAR system. FIFA recommends this scheme as an alternative for leagues that wish to implement it.

It was previously reported that Sweden refused to implement VAR due to protests from fans. Also, a number of Premier League clubs are against the use of video replays from the new season.
