Athletistic / Olympic Games. In New Caledonia, the Olympic torch relay was canceled due to unrest on the eve of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
According to BFMTV, French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal announced this decision after a meeting with the presidents of the chambers of Parliament. Note that New Caledonia is a particular administrative-territorial entity of France, located in the Pacific Ocean (in relative proximity to Australia). The Olympic torch relay in this overseas territory was scheduled to take place on June 11.
The unrest in New Caledonia comes amid a proposed law to expand voter lists for elections in the region. It should be noted that the total amount of damage caused by the unrest has already exceeded 500 million euros.
The Summer Olympic Games will be held in the French capital from July 26 to August 11.
