Russian track and field athlete Anna Chicherova admitted that she did not expect a four-year disqualification for the Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva .
Valieva’s doping case became public in February 2022 during the Beijing Olympics; trimetazidine was found in the Russian Championship athlete’s sample. After a long procedure, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) announced in January 2024 the disqualification of the Russian for four years. The suspension period is counted from December 25, 2021, and its results are canceled from this date.
— You expressed the hope that there would be common sense in the case of Kamila Valieva’s doping history. Are you surprised she was suspended for four years?
– This is all very strange, why did you make such a difficult decision? Many questions arise on this subject. I don’t think anyone expected Camila to be disqualified for four years.
– What will happen to Valieva now? Will she end her career?
– I don’t know how likely this (return) to figure skating is, there is a lot of competition, the age limits change the situation, but we are talking about a very talented girl – everything will depend on the decision of Kamila. If she decides to come back, I hope she can achieve some big victories.
— Is this a hard blow for the image of OCD?
“It is obvious that this whole situation was aimed at destroying the image. They created a noisy news event precisely during the Olympics – then this steering wheel simply started spinning,” Chicherova said, as quoted by Metaratings.ru.
