Ukrainian saber team’s third team medal of the season and first gold of the year
Ukrainian women’s team won gold in the team competition, which took place as part of the stage World Cup saber fencing in Bulgarian Plovdiv.
Our country was represented in this competition Olga Kharlan, Alina Komashchuk, Elena Kravatskaya And Yulia Bakastova.
On the way to the final, the Ukrainian fencers successively beat the teams of Algeria (45:35), the USA and France (both times – 45:38). In the last confrontation, the leader of the Ukrainian national team, Olga Kharlan, managed to take revenge against the first world ranking number Sarah Baltzer for yesterday’s defeat in the individual final.
In the decisive battle, the blue-yellows faced off against the Spanish team. Before the last, ninth, fight, Ukraine was losing with a score of 37:40. But the same Harlan helped make a comeback, confidently defeating Aracely Navarro and bringing her team a strong-willed victory 45:43.
The Ukrainian saber team was able to win the World Cup stage for the first time in a year – the previous triumph was dated May 2023. This season, let us remind you, this team took second place in Athens (the French won the final there) and won bronze in the Belgian Sint-Niklaas.
The aforementioned “silver”, obtained by Ukrainian saber fencers in the capital of Greece in March, allowed them to win a team license for the 2024 Olympics. Before the start of the Olympics, our team will take part in the 2024 European Championship, which will be held from June 18 to 23 in Basel, Switzerland.
