Athletistic / Chess. Thirteen-year-old Russian chess player Ivan Zemlyansky met the grandmaster standard. He became the youngest grandmaster in Russian history.

The chess player improved the result of Anish Giri, who currently represents the Netherlands. Giri became a grandmaster in Russia at the age of 14 years and 7 months. Zemlyansky met the criteria at the age of 13 years and 8 months.

The information was confirmed by the Russian Chess Federation (RFC). Zemlyansky managed to fulfill the standards at the tournament in Sharjah (UAE).

“Based on the results of eight rounds, Zemlyansky fulfilled the final standard of a grandmaster and at the next FIDE Congress he will become the owner of the highest chess title. Zemlyansky is the youngest grandmaster in the history of the country, he is not. However, at 14 years old, the rising star will celebrate his birthday on August 31,” he quotes the words of the Executive Director of the Russian Federation, Alexander Tkachev.
