Cyclist Dmitriev: “It’s very difficult to laze around hoping to qualify for the Olympics”

Olympic medalist, world champion in track cycling Denis Dmitriev says it’s hard for him to join the fight 100% without international competitions.

This week at the Russian Championships, Dmitriev won the individual sprint.

– I always have it so that at the start of the season I just swing. My favorite time is the end of summer and then the fall competitions. The body is already sharpened for that, by October the European championship then until February, date of the world championship. The fact that in the spring I was not very, this is normal for me. I feel good physically, but mentally sad without an international debut, Dmitriev told .

— The Union Cycliste Internationale has announced a qualification system. Does the moment of selection inspire hope?

‘Yes, there is hope, but for the moment we are getting warmed up.

– Is lounging hard?

I’m not going to lie, it’s very hard. It’s interesting for less experienced athletes at the Russian level to fight with more experienced and titled ones, it’s interesting to beat them. But for us experienced athletes, it’s harder to get up to speed.

Is it difficult to be 100%?

– Yes. I notice this not only in myself. What to do? Look for additional incentive for these athletes. From now on, we cannot bring any of the international cycling superstars to our competitions. But we can create a series of departures with interesting endowments, with entourage. We need to find an approach that will allow us not to lose everything we have for the duration of our ban.
