Gasperini: We beat Sporting, Liverpool, Marseille and Bayer. These victories add shine to our achievement

Atalanta defeated Bayer Leverkusen in the UEFA Champions League final

Head coach Atalanta Gian Piero Gasperini commented on the victory in Europa League. In the final, the Bergamaschi defeated Bayer – 3:0.

“This was probably the peak of our last years. It was already prestigious to reach the Europa League final, and we won it against the best teams. We beat Sporting, which is the champion of Portugal. We played against Liverpool when they were top of the table. Premier League. We played against Marseille, who are a very good team, and today we beat the German champions. “Winning against such great teams adds shine to our achievement.”

“We don’t necessarily think we’re better than Liverpool or Juventus, but we were better that night. We were always very dangerous, we scored three amazing goals and we had chances to score more, so I think we did a very good job. It’s a good job.”

“I am very proud of all of Italy. The victory with Atalanta is, perhaps, one of football’s fairy tales.”

“We, of course, showed a great game and we had to play against such a top team. I never believed that a trophy would change our course; We have played so many matches like this over the years and in this season alone, of course it will be marked by this trophy, but Atalanta should only be judged on this season and everything we have done.”

“Ademola Lukman? We had a senior manager who worked at Leicester and saw an opportunity to bring him over from Everton. He wasn’t too productive in England. I saw and used him in a more attacking role. Tonight he achieved something that will remain in the annals of the team, the history of football: an amazing hat-trick.”

Atalanta won their first European Cup in history. The victory for Gasperini’s team was brought by a hat-trick from Ademola Lookman.

The Bergamasques have two Serie A matches left to play – against Torino and Fiorentina, contenders for a place in the Conference League. Gasperini’s team no longer has tournament motivation – it secured its participation in the 2024/25 Champions League ahead of schedule, even before the final against Bayer.
