Haye: I didn’t expect Usyk to push Tyson Fury the way he did

David called the Ukrainian a “legend”

Former two-weight world champion David Hay commented on the victory of Alexander Usik (22-0, 14 KOs) over Tyson Fury (34-1-1, 24 KOs) in the fight for the title of absolute world heavyweight champion.

“What courage, determination, strategy, battle plan. I didn’t expect Usyk to come at Tyson Fury the way he did. He did not leave him alone, as he said before the fight. Usik stood next to him every second.”

“Fury was leaving, but Usyk closed the distance again and continued to apply pressure. He wore Tyson Fury down, made him waste gas again and again until there was nothing left.”

“The ninth round really set the seal. The referee counted Fury out as a standing knockdown. Many people say that if the ropes hold your opponent, it is considered a knockdown. Well, that means there were three knockdowns in the ninth round because the ropes held Fury down three or four times.”

“But who cares? The strongest one won. I’m not sure there will be a rematch here. For one reason or another, I don’t feel that they will have a rematch. But what a fight! Usik, you are a legend.”

On the night of May 19, Usik inflicted the first defeat of Fury in his professional career in a fight that took place at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia). The victory was awarded to the Ukrainian by a split decision: 115-112, 113-114 and 114-113.

Usik became the first absolute world heavyweight champion in the era of four belts. In the heavyweight division, the last time Lennox Lewis held absolute status was in 1999, but then three titles were enough for this title.

It was reported that an agreement had been reached between Usyk and Fury for a re-fight. The Chairman of the General Authority of Entertainment of Saudi Arabia, Turki Al al-Sheikh, stated that the rematch between Alexander and Tyson is scheduled for October 12-13 in Riyadh.
