Ukrainian football coach died in the war with Russia – Vasily Smolievsky.
In pre-war times, Smolievsky worked as a coach at the Boryspil Youth Sports School. With the beginning of the full-scale military invasion of the Russian Federation in Ukraine, Vasily joined the ranks of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
The 36-year-old coach died in August 2023 in the Zaporizhia direction, but official confirmation has only appeared now. This month, Vasily Smolievsky was posthumously awarded the Order “For Courage”, 3rd degree.
In early May, the death of two-time European weightlifting champion Alexander Peleshenko was reported. In April, it became known about the death of former handball player Sergei Chuprina and international master of sports, shooting coach Valentin Dondikov. In March, Master of Sports of Ukraine in rowing, multiple champion of Ukraine and bronze medalist of the European Championship, Dmitry Gubanov, died.
