Olympic swimming champion Chelsea Hodges announced his retirement due to a chronic hip injury and back problems.
Hodges, 22, was part of the Australian team that won gold in the 4x100m medley relay at the Tokyo Olympics.
“It is with a heavy heart that I announce my retirement from sport. It’s been a difficult 18 months and I didn’t expect to end this chapter of my life now, but I believe I made the right decision.
I had to do this, otherwise I would lose the chance to be as healthy as I wanted to be in the future. “At the end of the day, I have to do what’s best for my future and listen to what my body is desperately trying to tell me,” the athlete wrote on the social network.
Hodges ends her career as the current Australian record holder in the non-Olympic 50m breaststroke.
