Acting head of the Russian Figure Skating Federation (FFKKR) Anton Sikharulidze explained the large number of All-Russian tournaments in St. Petersburg in the coming season by the increased interest of city residents in figure skating.
The FFKKR Executive Committee on Thursday approved the schedule of the main All-Russian figure skating competitions for the 2024/25 season. St. Petersburg will host the Russian Grand Prix stage, national team skate tests, the Russian show jumping championship and a tournament with a show program. On Friday, a press conference was held with the participation of Sikharulidze and the general director of the FFKKR. Alexandra Kogan .
— Why are there five stages in the tournament schedule and not six?
Kogan: We have reduced the number of Grand Prix in order to increase competition between athletes, including the main team. Make these competitions more spectacular, so that more athletes strive to participate.
— Why was there a Spartakiad last year, but now the final stages for juniors and adults are separate?
Kogan: Especially. Increase athletes’ interest in participating in each competition. In addition, junior tournaments are close together, so we cannot organize them on the same dates as adults. This will benefit juniors more.
— A large number of tournaments in St. Petersburg. What is this linked to?
Sikharulidze: St. Petersburg has a convenient ice rink, the city is very large. The spectators arrive, the stadiums are crowded. Convenient logistics and beautiful city.
Kogan: The public is understanding and loves figure skating. They come with pleasure.
— Many attribute this to the fact that Anton Tarielevich comes from St. Petersburg.
Sikharulidze: Well, Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin is also from St. Petersburg. First of all, he comes from St. Petersburg, I am already there for the second time,” reports the correspondent, reporting the managers’ comments.
