Swimmer Gunesh, who demonstratively stepped on the Russian flag, is disqualified for violating anti-doping rules

Turkish swimmer Victoria Gunes who demonstratively stepped on the Russian flag, was disqualified for violating anti-doping rules, reports the Aquatics Integrity Unit.

Gunes was disqualified for violating rules about reporting her whereabouts to anti-doping officials.

Her disqualification begins on February 19, 2023 and she will be able to resume performances no earlier than May 23, 2026.

In March 2022, Güneş posted a photo on his social media of a person standing on a Russian flag on the ground. In their replays, Russian swimmers asked the international federations – World Aquatics (then FINA) and European Aquatics (then European Swimming League) – to intervene.

Güneş (formerly Victoria Solntseva) started her career in Ukraine and is already a medalist at the European Championships as a member of the Turkish national team. After joining the Turkish national team, she trained for some time under Russian specialist Irina Vyatchanina.
