Empoli snatched victory over Roma in stoppage time. Kovalenko’s team escaped relegation to Serie B

The Ukrainian did not take the field in the final match of the season

Empoli won at home over Roma in the match of the 38th (last) round Italian Championship – 2:1.

In the 13th minute, Matteo Cancellieri gave Empoli the lead. Wolves quickly came back, but Brian Cristante’s goal was disallowed after a VAR review. Before the break, Roma still managed to restore parity through the efforts of Houssem Aouar.

The end of the match came in stoppage time. Mbaye Niang’s precise strike brought such an important victory for Empoli.

Empoli’s Ukrainian midfielder Viktor Kovalenko spent the entire match on the bench. In total, the midfielder has played in 17 matches in Serie A this season.

Roma finished the season in sixth place in Serie A and qualified for the Europa League. Empoli took 17th place and saved itself from relegation to Serie B. The gap between Kovalenko’s team and Frosinone (18th position) was only one point.
