Zhilei: Usyk deserved victory over Fury, he is a great warrior

In the rematch, both boxers must correct the mistakes of the first confrontation

Former WBO interim champion Zhang Zhilei commented on the victory of Ukrainian Oleksandr Usik over Briton Tyson Fury for the title of absolute world heavyweight champion.

“Usyk deserved this victory, he is a great warrior. They were both good. Tyson Fury was fine. Two perfect fighters shared the ring. It was a fantastic fight, but I think Usyk was stronger.”

“I’m not in a position to give them advice on revenge. This is the business of their teams, this is their fight. The only thing I can say is that you need to learn a lesson from this fight, no matter how it ends – victory or defeat.”

On the night of May 19, Usik inflicted the first defeat of Fury in his professional career in a fight that took place at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia). The victory was awarded to the Ukrainian by a split decision: 115-112, 113-114 and 114-113.

Usik became the first absolute world heavyweight champion in the era of four belts. In the heavyweight division, the last time Lennox Lewis held absolute status was in 1999, but then three titles were enough for this title.

It was reported that an agreement had been reached between Usyk and Fury for a re-fight. The Chairman of the General Authority of Entertainment of Saudi Arabia, Turki Al al-Sheikh, stated that the rematch between Alexander and Tyson is scheduled for October 12-13 in Riyadh.

As it became known on May 25, Fury officially activated the rematch option, as announced by the head of the Top Rank promotion company Bob Arum. According to him, the second fight between Usik and Fury will take place at the end of 2024 or at the beginning of 2025.
