Bras, Olympic pole vault champion, disqualified for doping and will miss the Paris Games

Brazilian pole vaulter Thiago Bras has been suspended for 16 months for violating anti-doping rules, the Athletics Integrity Unit announced on its website.

A sample from the 30-year-old athlete, taken during the Diamond League in Stockholm last summer, contained the metabolite ostarine, which is on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) banned list. The athlete was suspended on July 28, 2023, the disqualification will expire on November 27, 2024. Thus, he will not be able to compete at the Paris Olympics.

The AIU, which will consider appealing the decision, sought a four-year ban against Bras, alleging, among other things, that he behaved “recklessly” and acted with “indirect intent”; he was aware of the risks associated with using supplements purchased from pharmacies in Brazil and “clearly ignored this risk.”

However, the disciplinary court found that even if Bras was “personally informed” of the high risk of contamination (samples) linked to the use of additives and therefore “unaware of this risk”, it could not be said that he had clearly neglected because

relied on the advice of his medical team.

Bras is a champion of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, bronze medalist of the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. The athlete also won silver at the 2022 World Indoor Championships.
