Chinese swimmer Sun Yang, who served a suspension for anti-doping rule violations, has announced his intention to return to competition.
The suspension of Sun Yang, 32, expired on Monday.
“I hope I can pick a competition early and stand on the starting block, get back into the pool I’m used to and get a familiar feeling again. I am proud of all the results and awards I have achieved during my career. For now, I just hope I can start with confidence. Four years ago, I already made a decision: I want to continue.
I said I would never give up… When I was suspended, it was very hard. My parents were afraid that I would go crazy, because at that time I swam alone in the pool every day,” the athlete said according to Reuters.
The agency notes that under Chinese anti-doping rules, athletes disqualified for doping for more than a year are suspended from national teams.
In 2018, Sun Yang smashed a test tube containing his sample with a hammer in front of doping control officers who came to test him. He initially refused to give urine, then he smashed the container with a hammer and extracted a blood sample. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) suspended Sun Yang for four years and three months for violating anti-doping rules. The suspension period begins on February 28, 2020.
Sun Yang is a three-time Olympic champion and current world record holder in the 1,500 meter freestyle.
