“We need to think about a system of relations in which the country’s best athletes would be used as “ambassadors of sports” – Stepanov

Olympic champion Veronica Stepanova in her column on , she proposes building a system of relations between athletes and the State, where the former would be used as a sort of “ambassadors of sport”.

“I am convinced that we must now think and start implementing a system of relations in which we, the best athletes in the country, are used as “ambassadors of sport”. The key word is “system”. I would include three elements:

— competitions at the Spartakiade/national championship level are mainly aimed at attracting the attention of the target audience, primarily young people. Comprehensive assessment of success – based on opinions, comments and new registrations for this sport. Yes, it will reduce the number of participants, but it will help the audience focus on the stars. And promising young athletes will always do well. Forgive me for “jamming”, but I won my first adult medals at my first national championship at the age of twenty;

— communication with young athletes, “marketing of your sport and your lifestyle” are part of the contractual obligations with the State. Why run exactly thirty races per season, when instead of three you can, relatively speaking, go to “Pionerskaya Pravda” (the Soviet tradition is alive in skiing, and it is wonderful) and host a master class;

— the state helps top athletes compete for recognition and media exposure to actors, musicians and other artists. Don’t offend them, we are closer to people and can offer more,” Stepanova wrote in a column on .
