The World Athletics Association presented the absolute championship in athletics with a record amount of $10 million, according to the organization’s website.
The first draw of the tournament will take place from September 11 to 13, 2026 in Budapest. In the future, the competitions will be held every two years. The championship will feature Olympic champions, world champions, Diamond League winners and the best athletes of the year. In total, around 400 athletes from around 70 countries will take part.
“Designed as the season finale and intended to captivate millions of viewers around the world, the Absolute Championships will be an exciting and fast-paced new format for athletics. Over three evening sessions, the tournament will showcase the best in athletics, including sprints, medium and long distance runs, relays, jumps and throws. Athletes will represent national teams so that individual success is reinforced by national pride.
Setting a new benchmark for financial rewards in sport, the Global Athletics Championship will have a total prize pool of $10 million, underscoring World Athletics’ commitment to providing athletes with additional earning opportunities. All athletes participating in the championship will receive financial rewards and the winners will receive $150,000,” the release said.
It is also noted that track and field athletes will benefit from “broader advertising rights, which will allow them to intensify their commercial activities and increase their recognition.”
