Olympic ice dancing champion Roman Kostomarov shared the feelings he experienced in the hospital.
In January 2023, Kostomarov was hospitalized with pneumonia. Due to complications, both feet and both hands were amputated. The figure skater has returned to the ice, performing in shows using prosthetics.
“I suffered in the hospital, I suffered a lot. When I started studying, I couldn’t even raise my arm while lying on the bed. Even when he lifted it with superhuman effort, the hand simply fell, as if it weighed 100 kg. I asked to bring a mirror to the room so that I could study in front of it without getting out of bed. It seemed to me that this way I would have the opportunity to see at least part of my own progress. But all I saw was a helpless monster looking at me from this mirror. I studied and I cried. Oksana could no longer see this, she constantly suggested: “Let me remove the mirror? But I categorically refused. I understood that I had to experience this too.
I still don’t like the photo, to be honest. But now, at least, I approach the mirror myself, rather than moving around in a wheelchair. It’s funny to remember, but while I was lying on my back in the hospital like a turtle, everyone who entered my room looked like giants – doctors, nurses. And when I finally got the prosthetics on, I was amazed at how healthy I was compared to them, even though I was unstable. Again, this added motivation to move and train, ”quotes RT Kostomarov.
