Van Bronkhorst became head coach of Besiktas

The Dutchman led Rangers to the Europa League final in 2022, but has been unemployed since the fall of that year

Besiktas officially announced the appointment Giovanni van Bronckhorst for the position of head coach.

The Dutch specialist signed a two-year contract with an option to extend for another season. His coaching staff will include Jean-Paul van Gastel (ex-Feyenoord teammate) and Serdar Topraktepe, who led the Black Eagles with the prefix “i. O.” at the end of last season.

Van Bronkhorst is known for his performances for Feyenoord, Rangers, Barcelona and Arsenal. Subsequently, having become a coach, Giovanni headed the mentioned clubs from the Netherlands and Scotland. With Feyer he became the champion (2017), won two Cups and two Super Cups of the country. He reached the 2022 Europa League final with the Glasgow club, but was sacked in the autumn of that year and has since remained unemployed.

During the 2023/24 season, Besiktas was led by five coaches – Şenol Güneş, Burak Yılmaz, Riza Çalımbay, the aforementioned Topraktepe (twice) and Fernando Santos. In January it was reported that van Bronckhorst was in talks with the Black Eagles, but then the club opted for the experienced Portuguese. In April, according to Romanian media, the Istanbul club was ready to be headed by 78-year-old Mircea Lucescu.

Besiktas had a disappointing season, finishing only sixth in the Super League. At the same time, the capital club was not left without a trophy – on May 23, the team beat Trabzonspor in the Turkish Cup final (3:2).
