Cepeda to fight for WBC belt against Prograis

The fighters must reach an agreement by August 30

World Boxing Council (WBC) nominated a bout for the organization’s junior welterweight title between Jose Cepedoy (35-2, 27 KOs) and Regis Prograis (27-1, 22 KOs).

Boxers must agree on a duel by August 30. If by the end of the summer Cepeda and Prograis cannot reach an agreement, then the organizer of the fight will be determined at the promotional auction.

It was expected that Cepeda’s rival would be Jose Ramirez, but he withdrew from the fight due to the wedding. Ramirez is set to become the mandatory challenger to fight the winner of the Cepeda-Prograis fight.

Cepeda holds the WBC Silver welterweight title, which he won in October 2020 after defeating Belarusian Ivan Baranchik. Since then, José has made three successful defenses against Henry Lundy, Josue Vargas and Francisco Pérez.

Prograis is a former WBA light welterweight world champion. He entered the ring in March of this year and won by technical knockout in the first round of British Tyrone McKenna.

Recall that Josh Taylor gave up the WBC light welterweight championship belt in early July. The Scot has vacated the title and will not defend it.
