“They will reach the adult level with experience and better skills” – Popova on increasing the maximum age for junior couples

Former figure skater, now choreographer and coach Betina Popova said that due to the increase in the age limit, junior couples will reach the adult level by being more skated.

Previously, the International Skating Union (ISU) Congress approved an increase in the maximum age for junior pairs and ice dancers. The maximum age for female figure skaters in junior pair skating is now 21 and for female figure skaters 23. In ice dancing, athletes will be able to participate in junior competitions up to the age of 21. Additionally, the age difference between the partners should not exceed seven years.

— In sporting couples, there is always a fairly significant age difference, it can reach 5 to 6 years, quite calmly, taking into account the size and physical criteria. For this reason, situations arise when the guy is already a master, and the girl is very young. I don’t see anything critical in this decision, especially since there are few strong couples in Europe and the USA. Moreover, the couple will reach the adult level with more experience,” Popova told .
