The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has rejected the appeal of American transgender swimmer Leah Thomas against the ban by the International Swimming Federation (World Aquatics) from participating in women’s competitions, according to a press release.
In 2022, the International Federation congress in Budapest decided that transgender people who transitioned after reaching the age of 12 would not be able to participate in women’s competitions under the auspices of this organization. Thomas began her transition process at the age of 19, so under the organization’s rules for 2023, she can only compete in a separate category.
On Monday, CAS ruled that Thomas had no grounds to overturn his ban from World Aquatics. According to the court, the athlete does not meet the conditions for admission to international women’s competitions. Thus, the American will not be able to qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
Thomas previously became the first openly trans woman to win a title at an NCAA Division I national championship.
