President of the Moscow Swimming Federation Yevgeny Korotyshkin told he was ready to try and help the six-time world champion Yulia Efimova looking for an opportunity to participate in the qualifying competitions for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
On Friday it became known that Efimova received neutral status from the International Swimming Federation (World Aquatics). This allows him to participate in international competitions under the aegis of the organization, notably the qualifiers for the Games, of which there are a limited number remaining. Later, Efimova told that she was not in time for the international qualifying tournament in Italy for the Olympic Games, because the competition organizers had refused her admission.
— Regarding the desire to perform at the Olympics, I must say as an official: if the management allowed it, then why not. As a former athlete, I can say that all their lives athletes were told that the Olympic Games were a goal to strive for, a goal to participate in, and a dream for everyone. No other competition can replace events of this magnitude.
The application deadline has passed and it’s a big problem. Today I will try to contact my Italian friends who work at the European Federation office. Let’s try to find out if it is possible to participate and qualify for other competitions. The decision, of course, will depend on other people, but I can try to help, ”Korotyshkin told .
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced in December 2023 that it would allow Russian athletes who successfully qualified for the 2024 Olympics to have individual neutral status without a flag, anthem or other national symbol. The IOC also banned the participation of athletes associated with security forces or who have expressed support for the SVO.
The Paris Summer Olympics will take place from July 26 to August 11.
