Korotyshkin explained under what conditions Efimova could qualify for the 2024 Olympics in the 100m breaststroke

President of the Moscow Swimming Federation Yevgeny Korotyshkin told how Yulia Efimova can qualify for the Paris Olympics.

The three-time Olympic medal winner and six-time world champion will compete in the 100m breaststroke at the Bahamas National Championships, an Olympic distance and qualifying event for the 2024 Games in Paris. Swimming will take place on Sunday, the last day of the competition; according to Moscow time, the competition will take place on the night from Sunday to Monday.

— The first time Yulia has to show today in the 100m breaststroke is 1 minute and 6.79 seconds. This is a Category A qualification, and when meeting this standard, a maximum of two athletes per country above this threshold can compete.

Yulia from Russia swims alone, and she can even count on a category B time, 1.07.12. But with such a result, it will be difficult to qualify for the Olympic Games prizes. Only one athlete from a country can enter the B category, if no one has fulfilled the A standard. And this is only an Olympic selection, when the IOC invites you to the Games on a residual basis. It’s like a wild card in tennis, when the International Olympic Committee must send you an invitation if the maximum quota of 852 athletes to participate in the Olympics has not been reached, ”Korotyshkin told .

Currently, 34 athletes worldwide have completed the A standard over a distance of 100m breaststroke. The best time belongs to Chinese Tang Qianting, 20 years old (1:04.39), achieved in April at the Chinese Championships. The B standard was completed by 10 other athletes.

Efimova has neutral status received from the International Swimming Federation (World Aquatics). However, its participation in the Olympic Games, if it meets the A or B standards, will have to be confirmed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
