Russian swimmer Evgeny Somov told that he already has the qualification criteria to participate in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
Previously, Somov received neutral status from World Aquatics. Thus, if a special commission of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) approves his participation in the Olympics, he will be able to compete in Paris.
“I have a standard to participate in the Olympics, I fulfilled it during the Atlanta Classic competition,” Somov told .
Somov’s result in the 100-meter breaststroke at the Atlanta Classic in May was 58.72 seconds. This is a result that exceeds the Russian record. The previous Russian record belonged to Anton Chupkov – 58.83, it was set in 2020.
In February 2022, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommended that sports federations not allow Russians and Belarusians to participate in international tournaments. Later, the recommendations were relaxed and in December 2023, IOC head Thomas Bach said that the organization would allow Russian and Belarusian athletes who passed the selection process for the 2024 Summer Games in a neutral status individual. Athletes will be able to perform in Paris without a flag, anthem and other national symbols.
The Olympic Games will be held in Paris from July 26 to August 11.
