Olympic speed skating champion Svetlana Zhurova in a conversation with , she appreciated the words of the Canadian figure skater Megane Duhamel about the coach Eteri Tutberidze .
Earlier, Tutberidze offered to freeze the world rankings in the absence of Russian athletes at the competitions. Duhamel wrote on social media that such statements are ridiculous, since Tutberidze “violated the principle of fair play at the Olympics”.
– I think when Eteri Tutberidze talked about updating the ranking, she thought: “What if the athletes support it”, like the tennis players did. After all, it was in the tennis federation that they supported the initiative that the best must compete with the best, and since there are no best, especially the Russians, there is no nothing to give in competitions. And the impulse of Eteri, I think, was precisely linked to this, in order to invite athletes to support such an initiative.
Unfortunately, in figure skating competition is not quite fair, apparently, because only honest and fair athletes can support the idea that if there are no leaders, then my victory is not significant enough to make me happy. And they probably think that since they’re not here, thank God we’ll take the top spots. But this is not the right sporting principle. You shouldn’t be surprised by this, because, of course, they will be happy to get points, first places and never leave the Russians, because they understand that they cannot compete with Sasha Trusova or Kamila Valieva, or with other athletes maybe because they don’t know how to jump like that and they are so beautiful. Unfortunately, this is what motivates athletes in the first place.
And according to Kamila Valieva, the procedure has not yet been completed to draw some conclusions and blame Eteri.
Valieva participated in team competitions at the Beijing Olympics, where our athletes won a gold medal. The day after the team leader’s free program, it became known that the illegal drug trimetazidine had been discovered during the figure skater’s doping test, which was carried out at the Russian Championships in December. The Court of Arbitration for Sport allowed Valieva to participate in individual competitions, where she took fourth place. The investigation into this case is not yet complete.
