Athletistic / Doping. Republican U.S. Rep. Morgan Griffith spoke at a congressional hearing on “exploring anti-doping measures ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics.” The politician proposed considering refusing to fund the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
“The United States provides approximately $4 million per year to the agency. Yet WADA has refused to send a representative to these hearings. This refusal to attend our meeting calls into question their commitment to their responsibilities if the AMA doesn’t want to do its job, why should we fund them? — CNN quotes Griffith as saying.
The source says Griffith’s initiative was supported by other lawmakers present at the hearings. Note that the discussion mainly focused on the case of doping of Chinese swimmers. Previously, the American newspaper New York Times published information about the discovery of positive doping tests in 23 Chinese swimmers. Journalists accused WADA of ignoring whistleblower data, as well as inconsistency in handling doping cases.
It is worth noting that later the Chinese Anti-Doping Agency (CHINADA) recognized the athletes’ positive samples, but said that trimetazidine entered their body unintentionally and was detected in small doses. The organization conducted its own investigation and found that the substance was found on kitchen utensils at the hotel where the swimmers were staying.
