Some Chinese swimmers not informed of positive doping tests: media

Some Chinese swimmers who were at the center of a doping scandal were not informed of the positive samples, Sportschau reports, citing ARD.

On April 21, the New York Times published an article stating that trimetazidine was found in the samples of 23 Chinese swimmers ahead of the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. According to the publication, the Chinese Anti-Doping Agency (CHINADA) conducted its own investigation, as a result of which the party adhered to the version that the substance entered the athletes’ bodies unintentionally and in small quantities. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) accepted CHINADA’s findings. The authors of the New York Times material accused the agency of ignoring informant data, as well as inconsistency in handling various doping cases.

According to ARD, at least three athletes, including Zhang Ruixuan, had no information about the failed doping controls. According to the regulations, the organization responsible for processing the results, in this case CHINADA, was required to “immediately inform” the athlete concerned.

It should be noted that in the CHINADA report, sent to WADA in June 2021, there is no mention that the athletes were informed of the incident. It says only that some athletes in the group, including swimmers who tested positive, were interviewed but were not told whether they were on the list of athletes who tested positive for doping.

— If doping is observed, the athlete must be informed immediately. Either way, there is a violation of the rules. The swimming association must also be informed and the athlete must be given the opportunity to comment on the situation, said Thomas Sümmerer, president of the German Sports Law Association.

It was previously reported that 11 of the 23 swimmers who tested positive in 2021 would compete in the 2024 Games.

The 2024 Olympic Games will be held in Paris from July 26 to August 11.
