Venezuela beat Mexico to secure a place in the 2024 Copa America playoffs

Venezuela beat Mexico in the second round of group B at Copa America 20241:0.

The outcome of the match was decided by a penalty, which was converted by Jose Rondon in the middle of the second half. The Mexicans had a chance to salvage the tie, but Orbelin Pineda missed the penalty kick at the end of regulation time.

In another Group B match Ecuador beat Jamaica3:1. Already in the first half, an own goal by Jamaican midfielder Casey Palmer and a penalty by Kendry Paez created a comfortable advantage for the Ecuadorians. In the second half, Jamaica reduced the deficit but conceded a third goal in stoppage time.

Venezuela picked up six points to guarantee their place in the quarter-finals of the Copa America. Earlier, the Argentina national team booked its place in the playoffs ahead of schedule. Mexico and Ecuador have three points each. Jamaica, after two defeats, closes the quartet and has lost its chances of reaching the playoffs.

In the final round, Venezuela will play against Jamaica, and Mexico and Ecuador will determine the second quarterfinalist from the group. Both meetings will take place on July 1.
