Olympic cross-country ski champion Veronique Stepanova said that in today’s conditions one needs to play sports to win the Spartakiad and the Russian Championship.
At the end of the season, Stepanova won the overall standings of the Russian Cup and also became the best in the distance races standings.
— My point of view is known: you have to play sport to win the Olympics or become world champion. In current conditions – the Spartakiad and the Russian Championship.
Playing sports professionally just to somehow meet the standards and fighting every time to be included in the national team, to be accepted for a position in the Central Sports Club – this is a bad investment of time and effort. Life passes by while you are in training camp, year after year.
But what if you’re 18 – you have ambition and perseverance, but behind your back the experts say: “She’s great, she’s trying, but she was pushed too far in her youth, the ceiling is already there”?
It’s too late to focus on moving technique or understand how to recover after junior training. That’s why I win, for example, on difficult tracks: they taught me on time,” Stepanova wrote.
