One month before the start of the Summer Olympics, the quality of the water in the Seine continues to deteriorate, according to a report from the prefecture of the Ile-de-France region and the city of Paris.
The official document indicates that the water was collected at four points between June 17 and 23 and its quality was analyzed in the city laboratory. The presence of. coli and enterococci in the liquid is checked.
During the 2024 Olympic Games, the Seine will host swimming events as part of the triathlon and open water swimming competitions.
“Water quality continues to deteriorate due to unfavorable hydrological conditions: rain, strong currents, little sunlight, temperatures below seasonal norms and pollution from the upper reaches of the river,” the report states.
The prefect of the Paris region, Marc Guillaume, also warned in a comment to AFP that the river would be unfit for swimming in early July due to its current.
Swimming in the Seine was banned in 1923 by prefect’s decree, in particular because of the rapid deterioration of water quality. According to French President Emmanuel Macron, more than 1.5 billion euros have been spent to clean the Seine.
The Olympic Games will be held in Paris from July 26 to August 11.
