World high jump champion found dead in South Africa

World high jump champion Jacques Freitag of South Africa has been found dead from gunshot wounds in South Africa, Reuters reports citing Netwerk24.

According to the publication, the body of Freitag, 42, was discovered near one of the cemeteries located in the suburbs of Pretoria. The police have opened a case under the article “murder”. The former athlete was reported missing; he was last seen leaving his mother’s house with an unknown man on the evening of June 17.

Freitag is a world champion in youth, junior and adult competitions. He won the 2003 World Championships in Paris with a score of 2.35 metres. Freitag took 20th place at the 2004 Olympics.
