The International Union decided to allow the athletes to compete, but with certain conditions.
Another international federation has equalized the rights of transgender athletes and women. The International Triathlon Union has agreed to new rules that will allow such athletes to compete in women’s competitions. This was reported by Insidethegames.
Among the main restrictions are that transgender people must show low testosterone levels in the past two years and not compete in men’s competition in the past four years.
Note that the decision was made by a vote of the members of the International Triathlon Union. At the same time, the president of the Athletes’ Committee, Tamas Toth, and the vice-president of the union, Jan Howard, voted against. The updated rules will take effect on September 2.
“We have been studying this issue for more than a year, listening to the opinion of all interested parties in the union. I can only thank all the committees and commissions for the detailed work they did to inform about this policy.
We are a small international federation, but we have always had unity and gender balance in our DNA. The policy we just approved shows that we put equity first, but demonstrates inclusiveness.
This is fully in line with the IOC recommendation and similar to what other IFs have been doing in recent months.
Of course, we will follow the situation and the evolution of this policy and we are open to review and discuss it as necessary over time, because this topic is still evolving and we must respond at the right time,” said the President of the International Triathlon Union. Marisol Casado.
