The U.S. government has launched a federal investigation into the case of positive doping tests by Chinese swimmers, the Associated Press reported, citing World Aquatics.
The organization’s executive director, Brent Nowitzky, has been served with a subpoena by the U.S. government. He is required to appear and testify.
At the same time, World Aquatics declined to specify where and when Novitsky received the subpoena, and did not say which agency was investigating the matter.
On April 21, The New York Times published an article stating that trimetazidine had been found in the samples of 23 Chinese swimmers ahead of the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. According to the publication, the Chinese Anti-Doping Agency (CHINADA) conducted its own investigation, as a result of which the party adhered to the version that the substance had entered the athletes’ bodies unintentionally and in small quantities. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) accepted CHINADA’s conclusions. The authors of the New York Times material accused the agency of ignoring the data of informants, as well as of inconsistency in handling various doping cases.
It had previously been reported that 11 of the 23 swimmers who tested positive in 2021 would compete in the 2024 Games.
The 2024 Olympic Games will be held in Paris from July 26 to August 11.
